How do penguins keep their nests clean?

Penguins avoid soiling their nests with excrement by launching their dropping like projectiles. They can shoot their excreta for distances of up to 500 mm out of their nests. To achieve this feat, penguins must produce an internal pressure which is more than half the atmospheric pressure. This is about four times as high as that produced by human beings.
