Without the oceans ,the climate on Earth would be quite different and certainly very much drier. What are EL Nino and La Nina
El Nino is a climatic phenomenon that occurs at intervals of between two and seven years in the pacific ocean , between the west coast of America and the coast of South-East Asia and Australia.The name EL Nino is the Spanish , and means 'the little boy',with the little boy in question being the infant Jesus. The phenomenon got its unusual name because it's effects-which include heavy rainfall along the South American coast and severe drought in South-East Asia and Australia-are particularly noticeable around Christmas time. The climatic effects are caused by changes in sea surface temperatures such as, for example, when the Humboldt Current along the east coast of South America becomes increasingly weaker, allowing water that is warmer than usual to penetrate into these areas.
La Nina - Spanish for 'the little girl' - usually occurs immediately after El Nino . Here too there are changes in ocean currents, which cause the trade winds to drive warm surface water towards South-East Asia . This, in turn, causes cold water from the ocean depths to well up along the Peruvian coast. The effects on the weather of La Nina are less severe than those caused by El Nina nevertheless, La Nina can bring increased rain to South-East Asia and Australia and lead to extremely dry conditions in South America.
